Course Description

Students explore basic concepts of pharmacology required to safely administer medications to a diversity of clients across the lifespan in a variety of health care contexts. This course provides students with a working knowledge of drug therapy and prepares them to use a comprehensive, systematic, and evidence-based approach to drug therapy when treating patients with various health challenges. Drug therapy is present within a framework of body systems, using client care situations to enhance the integration of content learned in human anatomy and physiology. The major drug classes are discussed using prototype drugs.

Learning outcomes

Describe the use of pharmaceuticals in a Canadian context.
Identify regulations in place to ensure public safety surrounding pharmaceutical use.
Determine & use quality pharmacology resources.
Discuss mechanism of action, common side effects and considerations of medications used to manage a range of common health conditions in different body systems.
Apply understanding of pharmacological concepts to a case study.
Challenge values & beliefs surrounding pharmaceutical use in the north American context.

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course and 50% or higher on the mandatory Final Exam.

Students using this course to satisfy any TRU Nursing Program requirements must achieve 60% in this course and 60% on the final exam.
