Course Description

This course establishes the relationship between cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology and the technical aspects of hemodynamic monitoring. Included in this course is the study of preoperative assessment and preparation of the patient, monitoring during anesthesia, general anesthesia techniques and postoperative care of the patient. On completion of this course, students should be able to understand the techniques and equipment involved in hemodynamic monitoring and their role in the assessment and treatment of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease.

Note: This advanced studies course is designed for allied health professionals who work in critical-care environments. ANES 4011 is part of TRU's Anesthesia Assistant Diploma Program. It is assumed that students enrolling in this course have a basic working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and blood gases.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology and physical assessment techniques for the cardiovascular system.
  • Describe the technical components of hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Outline the various monitoring techniques for venous and arterial systems, the pulmonary artery, cardiac output, and oxygenation.
  • Describe hemodynamic monitoring for pediatric and cardiac disease patients.

Assessments

Please be aware that should your course have a final exam, you are responsible for the fee to the online proctoring service, ProctorU, or to the in-person approved Testing Centre. Please contact exams@tru.ca with any questions about this.

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course, and 50% or higher on the final mandatory exam.

Students applying this course toward any TRU Health Care program may be required to obtain a minimum 60% on the course overall to meet program requirements.

Recommended requisite(s)

It is strongly recommended that the student be an R.R.T., R.N., M.D., or an equally qualified individual with at least one year of clinical experience prior to taking this course.
