ANES 4031 - Clinical Anesthesia and Special Considerations

Course Description

Students explore the application of anesthesia in specific practice areas and contexts. General, regional, and specialty areas of anesthesia are considered with specific reference to obesity, neonatal and geriatric anesthesia, cardiac pathology, cardiovascular disease, endocrine diseases, thoracic surgery, neuromuscular disease, neurosurgery, trauma, and crisis management. Students analyze cases, develop anesthetic plans and evaluate considerations for specific patient subsets.

Learning outcomes

• Develop an anesthesia plan and predict the benefits associated with a thorough preoperative assessment.
• Describe Bariatric anesthetics considerations in terms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, airway, ventilation, positioning
• Describe general patient positioning, evaluating impacts and possible risks.
• Identify geriatric anesthetic techniques, comparing regional and general, and describing pharmacology and causes of delirium
• Identify and compare neonatal drug dosages, IV volumes, congenital difficulties (airway), and ventilation considerations.
• Develop and describe anesthesia plans for the obstetric and pediatric patient.
• Identify anesthetic considerations of Cardiac disease in the surgical patient population and the implications of anti-coagulation
• Analyze anesthetic considerations for Endocrine disease.
• Determine anesthetic management for patients with Renal dysfunction in terms of pharmacology, fluid management, laboratory data and electrolytes
• Analyze anesthetic considerations for neurological and neuromuscular diseases in terms of pharmacology, positioning, and ventilation
• Evaluate anesthetic considerations for trauma patients.
• Compare spinal, epidural and peripheral nerve blocks (PNB) and describe regional methods
• Analyze indications and contraindications for procedural sedation, including: airway access, airway assessment, appropriate dosing, and comorbidities.
• Respond to various types of crisis (equipment, delivery of anesthetics, hypoxemia, bradycardia, tachycardia, hypovolemia, movement, fire, etc.) and assess efficacy of interventions.

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve 50% or higher in the overall course, and 50% on the mandatory final project.

Students applying this course towards any TRU Health Care program may be required to obtain a minimum grade of 60 per cent on the course overall to meet program requirements. Students who do not submit an assignment will be assigned a mark of zero (0) for that assignment. It is recommended that students complete all assignments in order to achieve the learning outcomes of the course.

Recommended requisite(s)

It is highly recommended that the student be a RRT, RN, MD or an equally qualified individual with at least one year of clinical experience prior to taking this course and have a strong foundation in Pharmacology such as that covered in HLTH 2511 or equivalent.
