ANES 4101 - Clinical Anesthesia

Course Description

Students are exposed to a wide range of anesthesia cases and experiences. Students develop an understanding of clinical anesthesiology and demonstrate their clinical skills through their choice of anesthetic agents, managing airways, starting routine IVs, arterial line insertion, patient monitoring and operation of anesthetic machines.

Learning outcomes

• Identify patient and surgical concerns as well as physiological problems. Students will be instructed in how to develop safe Anesthetic plans to address these problems / concerns.
• Manage the airway and ventilating adult and pediatric patients including:
  • Use of bag and mask
  • Insertion of oral airways
  • Intubation of normal patients (grades I and II)
  • Insertion of LMAs (laryngeal mask airways)
  • Use and adjustment of O.R. ventilators
  • Use of adjunct airway equipment
• Start I.V.'s, small and large bore, in pediatric and adult patients
• Achieve competence in the insertion of arterial lines.
• Anticipate the monitoring required for specific cases
• Set up equipment for monitoring
• Assist with insertion of CVP and Swan-Ganz catheters
• Demonstrate skills in the maintenance, testing, operation and troubleshooting techniques of:
  • Anesthetic machines
  • Anesthetic vaporizers
  • Anesthetic ventilators
  • Anesthetic circuits
  • Anesthetic gas monitors
  • Cardiac monitors
  • Non-invasive monitors (BP, pulse oximetry ECG)
  • Autologous blood transfusion equipment
  • Trace gas monitoring
• Demonstrate an understanding of which drugs are commonly used in the practice of anesthesia, as well as the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of each of those
• Assist with peripheral nerve blocks with and without ultrasound.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the anesthetic considerations and the clinical management required for many types of anesthetic cases.

Assessments

This course is assessed on the basis of a student's completion of the checklists in the competency manual. Successful completion of all aspects of the evaluation will result in a successful completion of this course. No grades are issued; the transcript for ANES 4101 will read "COM" (Complete) or "NCG" (No Credit Granted).
