Course Description

Students are introduced to specific learning disabilities (LD). They gain a historical perspective on learning disabilities and an overview of relevant theoretical frameworks and models of learning disabilities. Students are introduced to current legislation in British Columbia and its relationship to the school district, school, and classroom levels. Two key topics are (a) inclusive education plans and (b) intervention strategies within the general education classroom.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand and critically examine the historical forces that have shaped our understanding of learning disabilities.
  • Discuss the definitions of learning disabilities and the controversies surrounding them, including cross-cultural factors.
  • Review informal assessment data of children with learning disabilities.
  • Design an Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) based on collected data.
  • Become knowledgeable of effective strategies for children with specific learning disabilities, including proactive classroom management and organization. 
  • Become aware of potential technology resources for children with specific learning disabilities. 
  • Recognize the value of Indigenous pedagogies and unappropriated Indigenous knowledge.
  • Integrate Indigenous perspectives and pedagogies into inclusive education practices

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course, and 50% or higher on the final mandatory project.
