ENGL 0501 - Advanced English Skills

Course Description

Students review and practise the skills necessary for writing effectual sentences, paragraphs, and short essays. By the end of the course, students are able to write effective application letters and short critical essays about literary selections in this Grade 11 English equivalency course.

The intended outcome of this course is for students to be as well-prepared for further education and decision making as typical students who have completed other secondary school and adult basic education (ABE) courses at the “Advanced English” (English 11) level, as articulated by the ABE English Working Group.

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course, and 50% or higher on the mandatory final exam.

Prerequisites

Two of: Composition 10, Creative Writing 10, Literary Studies 10, New Media 10, Spoken Language 10, EFP Writing 10, EFP Literary Studies 10, EFP New Media 10, EFP Spoken Language 10, or equivalent.

Recommended requisite(s)

ENGL 0401 or English 10, but placement can also be made on the basis of an English assessment, available on request.
