ENGL 0601 - Introduction to Literature

Course Description

This course introduces Canadian writers and the different forms of fiction. Students learn to think critically about literature in this Grade 12 English equivalency course.

Learning outcomes

• Comprehend and respond to literature and informational text effectively and efficiently.
• Critique and discuss the style and substance of novels, using a range of means of literary analysis.
• Critique and discuss short stories in appropriate terms, including plot development, characterization, conflict, symbolism, theme, setting, and many aspects of style.
• Critique and discuss poetry in appropriate terms, including rhythm and imagery.
• Critique and discuss drama, including film drama, in appropriate terms that relate drama to other kinds of literature.
• Compare and contrast literary works and genres.
• Create well-developed essays to express critical insight.
• Create original compositions.
• Identify and correct English errors in your written work.
• Document sources of information.
• Use oral/aural communication, cooperative communication, media information, and computers to enhance your learning.

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course, and 50% on the mandatory final exam.

Recommended requisite(s)

ENGL 0501 or English 11 are recommended. Placement can also be made on the basis of an English Assessment, available on request.
