HLTH 3101 - Client-Directed Care Management

Course Description

This online course is intended for professionals working in the health system and/or Upper-level students in health degree programs wishing to develop their knowledge and skill in care management. Students explore the theory of care management within a client-directed service philosophy including ethical decision-making using bioethical principles, the balancing of autonomy and risk, the legal context of care management, and system barriers to client-directed service delivery. Using both teleconferences and online discussions, the course is delivered in the context of current and emerging health policy and organizational structures.

Learning outcomes

• Define client-directed care management in context of the Canadian Health Care System.
• Apply the activities of a client-direct care management framework.
• Apply the techniques of critical thinking, relationship building and self-reflective strategies to client-directed care management practice.
• Apply a client-directed care management process that is common to care managers.
• Demonstrate understanding of client autonomy, risk management and ethics by applying definitions, concepts, principles and processes to complex care situations.
• Identify pertinent legislation and the implications of the legal framework for client-directed care management practice based on the Canadian legal system.
• Apply care management models to care situations reflecting a client-directed approach and perspective.
• Analyze and describe how client-directed care management principles and practice apply at a systems level.
• Demonstrate that knowledge and tools from the course can be applied to your practice as a client-directed care manager.
• Demonstrate the ability to integrate course knowledge and tools to increasingly complex care situations.

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course and 50% or higher on the mandatory Final Project.

Prerequisites

Graduation with a Health Care diploma, experience in a health care setting and recent upper-level coursework are recommended.
