Course Description

This lab course provides nursing students with opportunities to review and apply the fundamentals of nursing from a Canadian health care perspective and to further develop technical skills required for safe nursing practice covered in NURS 3641. Attendance at a face-to-face laboratory workshop to demonstrate safe nursing practice in a simulated environment is required. Communication, inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking along with relevant documentation in the clinical setting are emphasized.

Learning outcomes

  • Articulate the principles and knowledge underlying specific nursing techniques/practice.
  • Demonstrate clinical judgement that is rooted in safety.
  • Apply evidence informed nursing knowledge to support nursing decisions.
  • Demonstrates principles of teaching and learning when teaching others in a health-related context.
  • Demonstrate competent numeracy skills in specific practice situations requiring calculations.
  • Effectively communicate in various modes including verbal and written within a nursing context.
  • Integrate cultural safety considerations into one’s nursing practice.
  • Review BCCNM entry level competencies for an entry level nurse and begin to identify learning goals.

Note: The above item can be purchased through Wolfie's Campus Store . This kit will be shipped to the Nursing building and it will be held for you and available for you when you attend NURS 3643 in-person lab:

Students are also encouraged to bring the textbooks from NURS 3641 to the lab. 

Assessments

The student will be evaluated as Complete (COM) or No Credit Granted (NCG) in this competency-based Lab. The Open Learning Faculty Member will use Skill Performance Checklists to evaluate students' completion of skills. These are pre-determined skills checklists based on pre-established key steps and elements in skills from the textbook for this course. Peer evaluation will also be used to evaluate skills.

Prerequisites

Admission to the Return to Registered Nurse-Practice Program, or Current BCCNM Registration, or permission of School of Nursing Associate Dean or appropriate designate.

Recommended requisite(s)

Participants in the Return to Registered Nurse-Practice Program are recommended to complete this course prior to registering for NURS 3651 and after completion of HLTH 3611, 3621, 3631 and NURS 3641.
