Course Description

The course emphasizes a communicative approach to acquiring written and oral language skills. A variety of learning activities are included, with emphasis on a creative approach to generating authentic written and oral communication in Spanish. A combination of reading, writing, viewing, listening, and speaking enables students to acquire a basic knowledge of Spanish quickly and effectively. Students are also introduced to the diverse cultural contexts in which Spanish is spoken and emphasizes the cultural differences among Spain, Central America, and South America. Upon successful completion, students are expected to demonstrate a CEFR A1+ level of proficiency.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to use Spanish oral and written language skills effectively to:

  • Order a meal in a restaurant.
  • Communicate about social events and emotions.
  • Conduct simple business transactions.
  • Describe physical states, health, and medical conditions.
  • Talk about using common contemporary technologies.
  • Talk about home-related activities and situations.
  • Discuss the natural environment and related issues.
  • Use preterite, imperfect, reflexive, and subjunctive verb tenses correctly.
  • Use various pronouns, adverbs, prepositions, and interrogatives correctly.
  • Use idiomatic expressions in appropriate contexts.
  • Discuss basic cultural, geographical, historical, and economic facts about North, Central, and South American countries.

  • Access to the Internet
  • Access to a computer with sound
  • Access to digital audio recording hardware, such as a computer with a microphone, is required for the oral assignments, and directions to free software for audio recording are included in the oral assignment instructions. Access to a computer with speakers and microphone (or a headset) and access to the Internet is required in order to use the SuperSite online resource for the successful completion of this course.

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course, and 50% or higher on the mandatory Final Written Exam and Final Oral Exam.
