Course Description

This course is a continuation of Water Treatment 1. Advanced topics in this course include: water softening; pH control; pre-oxidation; and dissolved metals removal. Students are provided an overview of chemical feed systems and chemical dosage calculations.

Learning outcomes

  • Explain the basic concepts and processes of coagulation and flocculation at a water treatment facility. Perform coagulation calculations. Understand the dosage requirements for coagulation.
  • Identify the major issues of coagulation operation, including troubleshooting and solutions.
  • Explain the importance of pH control in water treatment. Describe Lime, soda ash, caustic soda and C02 systems. Perform calculations for pH control.
  • Explain the importance of water softening and the processes involved.
  • Describe the purpose of pre-oxidation in water treatment.
  • Describe the process for removing dissolved metals in water.

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 70% or higher on the overall course, and 50% or higher on the final mandatory exam.
