Course Description

In this course, the student will be given the opportunity to gain confidence and competence in the role of the Registered Nurse (RN) in the current healthcare context. This course prepares the student to practice nursing according to the Health Professions Act, RN Scope of Practice, and the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) Professional and Practice Standards. The student will apply their nursing knowledge and skills in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care. There will be an emphasis on nursing leadership and collaboration with the interprofessional team to facilitate client health care services.

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate consideration of and respect for the spiritual, religious, and cultural values, beliefs, and practices of clients.
  • Demonstrate consideration of and respect for the gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation of clients.
  • Practice from a perspective that recognizes the origins of the health disparities of Indigenous Peoples and the contributions of nursing practice to the achievement of optimum health outcomes for Indigenous Peoples in a culturally safe manner.
  • Provide relevant information for clients to make informed decisions.
  • Develop an education plan with the clients and interprofessional teams to address learning needs.
  • Demonstrate critical inquiry to support professional judgment and reasoned decision making to develop nursing care plans.
  • Anticipate potential health problems/issues and their consequences for clients.
  • Organize own workload, assign nursing care, set priorities, and demonstrate effective time management skills.
  • Maintain the BCCNM Professional and Practice standards expected of a Registered Nurse
  • Demonstrate self-directedness and accountability for maintaining professional competencies and fitness to practice.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to coordinate client care.

Required text and materials

There is no required textbook for this course.

Students may want to acquire a textbook related to the specifics of their related practicum including clients and location, such as a foundational textbook in one of the following: Critical Care, Emergency, Gerontology, Maternity and Women's Health, Medical, Surgical, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric-Mental Health, Public Health, Community Health or Home Health.

Additional requirements

Prior to a practice placement request, the following documents must be submitted to the learning management system site:

  • Current Criminal Record Check (within one year of registering in NURS 3651).
  • Current Basic Life Support Certificate (within one year of registering in NURS 3651), Internet and/or online certification are NOT permitted.
  • Workplace Hazardous Material Information System training (WHMIS).
  • Proof that immunizations are up-to-date.
    • TB skin test must be within 6 months from the start date of NURS 3651.
  • Completed HSPnet Consent Form.
  • Completed Health Status Self Declaration form.
  • Current Respiratory Mask Fit Testing (within one year of registering in NURS 3651).
  • Completion of the Student Practice Education Orientation (SPECO) modules.

Prior to the start date of the NURS 3651 preceptorship:

  • Completion of ilearn modules required by each Health Authority, such as:
    • Electronic Charting system
    • Pyxis and/or Ominicell Automated Dispensing Cabinets
    • Meditech Patient Care System

Assessments

The 300-hour preceptorship-based practice course is graded as Complete (COM) or No Credit Granted (NCG). All evaluation components must be completed adequately as determined by the Open Learning Faculty Member.

Prerequisites

  • Admission into the Return to Registered Nurse Practice program and successful completion of HLTH 3611, HLTH 3621, HLTH 3631, NURS 3641, and NURS 3643;

OR

  • Admission into a Consolidated Practice Experience, and successful completion of NURS 3641 and NURS 3643;

AND

  • NURS 3651 must be started within six months of completing NURS 3643 (lab practice course).
