Course Description

Students acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed to effectively utilize information systems and technology in support of organizational strategy. Topics include an introduction to information systems in organizations; strategy and information systems leadership; databases and data management; information networks; the Internet and social media; enterprise resource planning and business applications; e-business; wireless and mobile technology; knowledge management; developing and implementing information systems; security and information systems auditing; information ethics and privacy; and practical skills using operating systems, word processing and spreadsheet software.

Learning outcomes

  • Explain what a management information system (MIS) is and describe its role in decision making within organizations.
  • Explain how the four components of an MIS add value to an organization.
  • Solve business problems using information technology (i.e., computers, networks, and various software solutions, such as Microsoft Word and Excel).
  • Solve business problems using decision-making systems.
  • Identify privacy, security, and freedom of information issues in a business environment.
  • Solve business tasks in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Additional requirements

  • Microsoft Office 2016 or Office 365 software.
  • Student Office 365 software—which includes Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access, and Publisher—is free for students via TRU’s IT Services.

Note: The functions and tools are different in Mac and Open Office versions as well as previous versions of Microsoft Office. Students have used older versions (Office 2007 or newer) and versions designed for Apple products with success, but the details will be slightly different, and support from your Open Learning Faculty Member will be impacted.

Assessments

Please be aware that should your course have a final exam, you are responsible for the fee to the online proctoring service, ProctorU, or to the in-person approved Testing Centre. Please contact exams@tru.ca with any questions about this.

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course, and 50% or higher on the final mandatory exam.
