Course Description

Students are introduced to event management law and risk management. This course has been designed to provide a broad perspective about the legal and risk management issues involved in planning and hosting tourism events. Students are also provided with an overview of many topics that can be studied at greater depth in future law courses.

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the legal system in Canada including contract law, human rights legislation, and employment law.
  • Understand the responsibility of event organizers towards risk for all participants is minimized.
  • Recognize how crowd management and behaviour can impact risk management plans.
  • Develop a plan for ensuring a safe festival site during set-up, production, and tear-down.
  • Develop a basic emergency communications systems and incident reporting system.

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course, and 50% or higher on the final mandatory project.
