Course Description

Students will examine the standards and legislation that regulate professional nursing practice. Students will become more aware of Canadian health care system trends and issues and the role of nursing leadership in creating healthy practice environments which prioritize patient safety and quality patient care outcomes. Opportunities are provided to critically reflect on the evolution of nurse’s work related to issues of social justice and health equity. Students will also explore evidenced-informed practice as the relationship between practice, theory, and research and develop an inquiry-based approach to learning and nursing practice.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe the significance of knowledge development in nursing.
  • Develop skill in writing for professional nursing practice.
  • Describe ways that nursing organizations, professional standards, ethical codes, and provincial and federal legislation contribute to safe, ethical, and competent nursing practice.
  • Apply principles of ethics and ethical decision-making processes to clinical situations with ethical issues.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, liability, and principles of jurisprudence that guide nursing practice.
  • Develop skills for locating, interpreting, and evaluating information, knowledge, and evidence.
  • Explore the Canadian healthcare system, including current challenges to the delivery of quality culturally safe healthcare.
  • Discuss the significance of equity in health care and nursing practice.
  • Articulate strategies to promote a culture of patient safety and quality practice environments.
  • Examine the influence of digital health technologies on health care delivery, inquiry, and nursing practice.

Note: HLTH 3611, HLTH 3621 and HLTH 3631 are changing their delivery method from paced to continuous entry. Students can register NOW and will be held until the course is available by the end of January 2025.

Required text and materials

There is no required textbook for this course.

Assessments

To successfully complete this course, students must achieve a passing grade of 50% or higher on the overall course.

Credit will be granted towards a program in the School of Nursing when course grade is 60% (C) or better. This refers to the overall course with assignments averaged to this percentage. A cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.33 (minimum 65%) must be maintained in order to progress to the next course.
